Bike to the Moon tracks the kilometers biked in the iMinds project with the same name. The distance from planet earth to the moon is 356,400 kilometers. During 2011, iMinds researchers and central staff use the app to count down to zero.
The app tracks individual performance via GPS, using an easy button to ‘start’ and ‘stop’ your cycling trip. Your performance is easily shared with friends and family through Facebook and Twitter. Furthermore, classes are shown for intermediate results like ‘distance biked’ and ‘height climbed’.
The Bike to the Moon app is available for Android and iPhone. Employees can also add the kilometers biked manually via the web site biketothemoon.iminds.be.
iMinds is an independent research institute of the Flemish government. The organization consists of about 1,000 researchers at the scientific research departments of the Flemish universities and a small central staff.
